At the end of the 19th century, Joseph Berman, came to the United States
from Russia. In 1898 he became a citizen and settled with his family at
a farm in Pennsburg on the Gerryville Pike. He started a junk business using
his horse and wagon.
Then in the '20s Joseph and his sons got into trucking with his first garage
next to the family farm. George Berman and his brothers went from selling
junk to selling International Harvester trucks. They were the first to do
business with them in the U.S. The small business that started on the family
farm grew into one of the largest leasing companies in the United States
at the time and was headquartered at High and Berks streets in Stowe.
George's
son, Jay, was born in 1941 and was said to have been born with a monkey
wrench in his hand. Jay spent summers working on the farm and in the
company garage were his love for cars was nurtured. He built his first car
at the age of 14. After getting his drivers license he spent countless hours
cruising around town with the guys. Jays love for cars led him to
dune buggies, MGs, then back to street rods.
